InDependence Day 2011

July 4, 2011

Two-hundred thirty-five years ago today a group of upper-class white men signed a document that shaped a nation. Was it perfect? No. But it set out the basic beliefs their country would be founded upon. We have not always stayed on the path they set us, but we always find our way back. We strayed often in the early days of our republic, the Alien & Sedition Acts one of the most obvious, and continue to do so today. From the government interfering in our personal choices to its denial of basic rights affirmed by the Constitution. We have no-knock warrants, restrictions on gun rights, a war on naturally occurring plants to ‘protect the children’ from drugs, pay an annual rent on property we supposedly own, and need a license to marry the person you love.  Why is the government involved in any of that? Because we’ve let them.

Don’t let me spoil your enjoyment of the fireworks and parades though. Far be it from me to call out the hypocritical, naked emperor on a day of such spectacle.

Hey, don’t forget to pick up that candy wrapper. Don’t want to be arrested for littering, do you?
